The SecureMesh™ Certified Pioneer Thermostat is a full-featured programmable communicating thermostat (PCT) that offers connectivity via the SecureMesh NAN and enables demand-side management programs. The Pioneer Thermostat lets a utility and its customers manage energy use and reduce peak levels of demand without sacrificing comfort and convenience.

Demand-Side Management

Research from the United States Department of Energy indicates that energy consumers can save 10% or more on their heating and cooling bills if a programmable thermostat is used in place of a manual one. Controlling peak energy use helps a utility to stabilize prices, reduce the need for additional power plants, and avoid disruptive brownouts or blackouts. The SecureMesh Certified Pioneer Thermostat provides a utility with a powerful method to control load during critical peak and other power events by remotely adjusting temperature setpoints. Widespread deployment of the Pioneer Thermostat enables a utility to reduce power consumption system-wide in real-time.

Active Consumer Participation

The SecureMesh Certified Pioneer Thermostat is a fully programmable device that enables a utility to adjust heating and cooling setpoints during load control events. Consumers can also set their own rules to govern the temperature offsets that will be applied, allowing customized tradeoffs between energy conservation and comfort based on current time-of-use rates and critical peak pricing events. And consumers can then manually override these rules by simply re-adjusting their desired temperature. Such opt-out decisions can be logged and reported to the utility to gauge consumer participation during curtailment events.

Utility Messaging

The SecureMesh Certified Pioneer Thermostat allows a utility to send messages directly to consumers, opening a new, direct channel of communications. Because the devices are addressable individually or as groups, messages can be directed network-wide or to pre-defined groups selected by geographic area, postal code, billing type, substation, or other criteria. Information on peak demand, outages, and Critical Peak Pricing events can be sent to consumers, as well as customer-specific information such as account status.

It can control most conventional HVAC equipment, including heat pumps. Advanced environmental control algorithms accurately and precisely control room temperature, and the unit boasts proprietary silent switching technology. The user interface is menu driven, with extensive help screens to assist the consumer. Additionally, a consumer portal can be used to configure the Pioneer Thermostat. All firmware in the device is fully upgradable over the NAN.
