The Communications Hub Interoperability Group is an alliance built to provide a simple yet  cost effective way for UK utilities to adopt smart metering; to expedite the benefits of money saving energy management technology to consumers and to support DECC in their drive forward of the National Smart Metering roll out.  The benefits of deploying interoperable products will be manifold for utilities, government and consumers – lower product and system development costs; introduction of consumer choice and less complex business processes.

Including GEO, nine industry players and in-home display providers have come together within Trilliant’s Interoperability Group, which utilises smart energy standards developed by Zigbee and the Smart Specification Working Group (SSWG).

The Government has identified smart meters as a key energy efficiency technology and is aiming for 52 million smart meters to be installed in 30 million homes and businesses in the UK between 2014 and 2019. The scale of this roll-out demands collaboration to ensure fast and efficient implementation.

Recent research commissioned by the European Smart Metering Industry Group found that UK households have the potential to achieve annual savings of £938 million a year by measuring and managing their electricity use using smart meters.  One of the key barriers to this roll out is the technical complexity of the multiple energy management devices on the market.  By unifying these manufacturers, Trilliant is aiming to limit the time and expense of separate standalone equipment roll-outs, and provide a simpler, more robust offering for utilities.

The award was made by the Dominican Corporation of State Electricity Companies (Corporación Dominicana de Empresas Eléctricas Estatales – CDEEE), the holding company that manages the transmission and distribution companies EdeNorte, EdeSur and EdeEste.

 MultiSpeak is a specification that defines standardized interfaces among software applications commonly used by electric utilities. It defines details of data that need to be exchanged between software applications in order to support different processes commonly applied at utilities.

Trilliant has been selected by PowerStream to provide Unit Smart Meter System and Services for residential, and commercial and industrial (C&I) use. For PowerStream, smart meters are an important area of focus given that they form the backbone of the utility’s Smart Grid infrastructure.

Unit Smart metering involves measuring the energy use of individual suites in multi-occupant buildings. This allows unit owners to be accountable for their own utility use and costs, benefiting the
owner, building and distribution system as a whole.

In 2007, as part of the culture of conservation, the government of Ontario mandated that all utilities in the province convert customers to time-of-use billing, which allows for different electricity rates at different times of day.  Time-of-use billing encourages customers to use power outside peak hours when possible, which can reduce the need to construct additional power generation and distribution infrastructure. In 2010, the regulator set aggressive targets for all utilities in Ontario to complete their TOU rollout.

Many utilities consider time-of-use billing to be a critical business benefit of the smarter energy grid because it allows them to delay the construction of power generation and distribution infrastructure, resulting in lower environmental impact, more reliable service, and lower capital expenditures.  Time-of-use billing is much more challenging to implement than simple meter reading – it requires high reliability, high bandwidth, and sophisticated communications networks.  Trilliant provided this communications network to Hydro One.

The Ontario Energy Board, in this report, shows that Hydro One converted more customers to time-of-use billing than any other utility covered in the program. Hydro One has one of the most difficult terrains in North America for a smart grid, going from very sparse rural areas to densely populated areas. Using Trilliant’s standards-based 2.4 GHz wireless mesh smart grid network, Hydro One was able to cover this difficult terrain and provide the benefits of the smart grid for its customers and the province.

“We felt strongly that the combination of HD Supply Utilities’ installation services and Trilliant’s multi-tiered SecureMesh technology would provide Victoria Electric Coop with a robust, high speed, low latency communications network that will serve as our Smart Grid foundation and meet AMI objectives,” according to Blaine Warzecha, General Manager at Victoria Electric Cooperative.  “Equally significant is the fact that we are implementing a solution that can grow to meet our future needs.”

Victoria Electric’s pilot program will be a 90-day test phase to designated locations in their service area.  A successful implementation could mean a full rollout to their entire service territory.    Initial applications will be to improve operational efficiency, provide interval data for Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) and Time-of-Use (TOU) rates, and enhance outage detection.

A key component in HD Supply Utilities’ GridAdvance™ integrated, end-to-end Smart Grid solution, Trilliant’s SecureMesh multi-tier architecture enables the two-way flow of data to integrate the utility’s head-end systems with distribution, smart metering, and home devices. These sections of the grid correspond to communication tiers: a Wide Area Network (WAN) tier, which connects distribution devices and aggregates the Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) tier, which connects meters and aggregates the Home Area Network (HAN) tier, which connects in-home devices.

Salim was responsible for energy and market management software and systems, including distribution automation for electric utilities.   He oversaw several ABB investments in Smart Grid companies, including ABB Technology Ventures’ 2010 investment in Trilliant.

Prior to ABB, Salim held senior executive positions at Landis+Gyr, Systems Control, Inc. (acquired by British Petroleum) and a venture-backed enterprise software start-up company in Silicon Valley. Salim’s vast management experience, strong understanding of the global utility market and deep expertise in smart grid business development are optimally suited to further accelerate profitable growth at Trilliant and best serve the needs of its growing list of global utility customers. As COO, Salim will manage day-to-day operations at Trilliant.

Prior to joining Trilliant, Mr. Parr was General Manager for Sensus Metering Systems, UK and Ireland. In that position, Mr. Parr also was also responsible for North European sales. Sensus is known as a global leader in utility infrastructure systems.

Mr. Parr will oversee all business development, sales, and project delivery for Trilliant customers throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Trilliant’s first landmark contract in the United Kingdom was announced in late 2010. Trilliant will be working with Centrica plc, a leading UK utility, to provide communications equipment for the smart meter rollout at its British Gas subsidiary. The initial roll out to support over 1,000,000 of British Gas’ nearly 16 million customer accounts will be completed in 2012 and make Trilliant one of the largest providers of public wireless network meter communications solutions world-wide.

Smart meters, combined with a Smart Grid, provide transparency into energy consumption for both utilities and consumers, helping people reduce their energy bills, reducing utility operational expenditures, all while also reducing carbon emissions.

BWP, a recipient of an American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) Grant, deployed approximately 1,000 commercial and residential meters during Phase I of its Smart Grid pilot program. As part of the initial deployment, all of BWP’s customers using 250 kW and above were converted to time-of-use rates. BWP relied on Trilliant’s SecureMesh™ communications infrastructure and UnitySuite™ head-end software to automate meter reading and deliver daily reports on late meters, outages, meter tampering, and more.

The next phase of BWP’s Smart Grid program will deploy smart meters to all remaining business and residences in the utility area by year end 2011 amounting to more than 50,000 meters.  BWP will utilize Trilliant’s solution to help manage service requests, customer inquiries, meter reading and service interruptions.

“One of our operational tenets is that you can’t improve what you can’t measure,” according to Joanne Fletcher, BWP Assistant General Manager/Customer Service & Marketing.  “Trilliant provided us with reliable and actionable data on both commercial and residential customers; the kind of data we will now rely on for future Smart Grid applications as we expand our energy management initiatives.”

Trilliant was selected as the prime contractor for communications infrastructure and head-end software and will be deploying GE smart meters throughout BWP’s service area. Trilliant is joined in this full deployment by eMeter, whose eMeter EnergyIP software provides the meter data management platform, and by Siemens Energy, Inc., who provides installation, configuration and commissioning services for this project.  Siemens Smart Grid Applications managed the integration between Trilliant’s communication networks and BWP’s utility enterprise systems to enable BWP to improve customer service and manage peak demand.

“BWP strikes me in many ways as the ideal ARRA Grant recipient.  BWP used their award and spent a great deal of time and resources in 2009 and 2010 learning how to properly deploy a mature and reliable Smart Grid infrastructure,” said Andy White, President and CEO of Trilliant.  “We were proud to play a role in their initial pilot and pleased to have been formally selected for the full Smart Grid deployment.”

Dr. Specker most recently served as President and CEO of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in Palo Alto, CA from 2004 to 2010.  Prior to leading EPRI, he founded a private consulting firm, Specker Consulting, LLC, that provided operational and strategic planning services to technology companies serving the global electric power industry.

Dr. Specker also had a distinguished 30 year career at General Electric (GE).  He served in many leadership roles at GE including as President of GE’s nuclear energy business.  Dr. Specker also served as President of GE Digital Energy, where he was responsible for the formation and start-up of a new business venture serving the growing needs of the digital economy for highly reliable electricity.
