The UK government has mandated a rollout of smart meters to all consumers in the UK by 2019, and this rollout is estimated to create £14bn in net benefits to the UK in consumer energy savings and lower energy generation demand, according to the Oxford Economics report, The Value of Smart Metering to Great Britain.

The demand for energy consumption in Malaysia is projected to increase by five percent per year over the next five years, and is likely to double in the next 20 years, according to Mercom Capital Group. To meet this need, TNBR has undertaken an ambitious smart grid demonstration project to pave the way towards the large scale implementation of smart grid technologies. These technologies will ultimately reduce the nation’s dependence on natural gas and coal, and help to withdraw from national electricity subsidies in the next four years.

The project is developed by TNBR with collaboration from Uniten (Universiti Tenaga Nasional), and is to be located at TNBR and Uniten campuses. As part of TNBR’s project, Trilliant will be deploying its multi-tiered RF mesh technology for both the Neighborhood Area Network and Wide Area Network. Trilliant’s 2.4 GHz RF mesh technology operates in license-free spectrum in Malaysia, simplifying the process for TNB to economically roll out RF mesh without requiring complex regulatory changes. The Communications Hub Interoperability Group is an alliance built to provide a simple yet  cost effective way for UK utilities to adopt smart metering; to expedite the benefits of money saving energy management technology to consumers and to support DECC in their drive forward of the National Smart Metering roll out.  The benefits of deploying interoperable products will be manifold for utilities, government and consumers – lower product and system development costs; introduction of consumer choice and less complex business processes.

Including GEO, nine industry players and in-home display providers have come together within Trilliant’s Interoperability Group, which utilises smart energy standards developed by Zigbee and the Smart Specification Working Group (SSWG).

The Government has identified smart meters as a key energy efficiency technology and is aiming for 52 million smart meters to be installed in 30 million homes and businesses in the UK between 2014 and 2019. The scale of this roll-out demands collaboration to ensure fast and efficient implementation.

Recent research commissioned by the European Smart Metering Industry Group found that UK households have the potential to achieve annual savings of £938 million a year by measuring and managing their electricity use using smart meters.  One of the key barriers to this roll out is the technical complexity of the multiple energy management devices on the market.  By unifying these manufacturers, Trilliant is aiming to limit the time and expense of separate standalone equipment roll-outs, and provide a simpler, more robust offering for utilities.

According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), interoperability is one of the greatest challenges facing smart grids as a multitude of technologies, systems and devices need to securely and effectively talk to each other. The award was made by the Dominican Corporation of State Electricity Companies (Corporación Dominicana de Empresas Eléctricas Estatales – CDEEE), the holding company that manages the transmission and distribution companies EdeNorte, EdeSur and EdeEste.

 MultiSpeak is a specification that defines standardized interfaces among software applications commonly used by electric utilities. It defines details of data that need to be exchanged between software applications in order to support different processes commonly applied at utilities.
