Trilliant to Supply E.ON U.S. with Mesh AMI Network Solution for Smart Meter Program
Designed to Help Residential and Commercial Customers Better Understand Energy Usage, Improve Environment, Reduce Bills
Redwood City, California, July 24, 2007 – Trilliant Incorporated, the industry's leading provider of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) based on open standards, today announced an agreement to supply the Trilliant AMI Mesh Network solution for the "Responsive Pricing and Smart Meter" pilot program to be run by Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E). LG&E, a subsidiary of E.ON U.S., a member of the world's largest investor owned energy supplier, will open the program to 2000 residential and small commercial volunteer customers encompassing gas and electric metering, energy conservation tools and in-premise displays.
Designed to test the idea that consumers who can easily access information on use and cost will shift usage patterns to take advantage of varying prices during the day, the program was approved by the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC). A customer, who chooses to reduce usage during the high-cost, high-peak load periods, through direct action or preconfigured set points, will see an overall reduction in their electric bill. Shifting usage away from those periods can benefit both the utility and its customers by reducing the maximum loads and thus lessening the need to build new power plants to meet peak demand.
"LG&E's proposed responsive pricing pilot program will incorporate time-of-use pricing with a real-time, critical peak pricing component; smart metering and information displays; and a Demand Side Management component for those customers who choose to participate in responsive pricing," said Greg Fergason, demand-side management program manager for E.ON U.S. "The implementation of this variable rate structure will be possible through the use of smart meters, information displays and DSM equipment such as programmable thermostats and load control switches."
"Automation of the usage of these loads will allow Pilot participants to shift usage without manual intervention on a daily basis. Indeed, our investigation for the Pilot indicates that using such technology has been successful resulting in high customer satisfaction and significant shifting of usage from hours of high demand," continued Fergason.
The integrated solution includes the Trilliant AMI Mesh Network, intelligent communications modules enabling smart electric and gas meters, home area network (HAN) devices and hosted software applications. The HAN includes smart thermostats, remote appliance controllers (RAC) and an in-home display (IHD) device that provides usage data obtained from the electric meter (peer-to-peer application). Trilliant bases its mesh wireless technology on the global 2.4GHz (gigahertz) IEEE 802.15.4 standards.
"This is the type of program, combining great technology with smart monitoring of consumer use, that will help us all wisely manage our energy resources in the future. When combined with dynamic pricing and consumer awareness programs, we believe that advanced metering infrastructure provides the foundation for sustainable, sound energy management," said Bill Vogel, president and CEO of Trilliant
