Nertec Principals Launch Trilliant with Plug ’n Play Energy Network Solutions for Utilities
Redwood City, California, June 27, 2005 – The Principals of Nertec Inc. today announced the launch of a new company, Trilliant Incorporated, and the industry's first completely Plug n' Play Energy Network Solutions that integrate advanced metering, distribution reliability and demand response.

"We have quietly built this business, commercializing standard-based solutions with thoughtful input from our customers", said Bill Vogel, President and CEO of Trilliant. "Their primary goal is to generate sustainable shareholder value by improving enterprise-wide operating efficiency while increasing revenue and enhancing the quality-of-service. Trilliant helps them achieve these objectives by providing significantly more benefits, at comparable cost, than alternatives. Additionally, Plug n' Play Energy Networks integrate advanced metering, mobility/broadband initiatives, smart grid and demand response."

To support true Plug n' Play, Trilliant offers a complete suite of communications products, data communications, and enterprise information management solutions. Standards-based products and complementary partnerships enable wide-scale implementation of smart energy network applications.

  • Smart Meter Solutions span commercial and residential services with integrated monitoring and control - all using end-to-end standards. Smart Grid Solutions deliver quality, reliability and maintenance information.
  • Demand Response Solutions enable posting of price incentives and dynamic load control.
  • The Trilliant strategy lets customers choose the device, network and/or software platform that best supports their chosen objectives. These solutions operate over the leading wireless mobility and broadband networks. Over thirty (30) utilities in North America are operating or evaluating these solutions.

The Need for Plug n' Play Networks
As utilities and regulators plan multi-billion dollar investments in smart metering and demand response, they are faced with complex market and enterprise issues as well as the inherent risk of stranded assets. Financial officers want to avoid these risks while enabling new services. However, most automation alternatives have evolved on proprietary, application-specific networks that lock the utility into 20+ year investments - potentially stranding assets in a dynamic market. This results in massive systems integration projects and regulatory initiatives. While stakeholders navigate this complex maze looking to facilitate efficient markets, there is a keen interest in strategic network solutions based on open standards.

"Our approach transforms meters from basic cash registers into strategic network and operational assets that mitigate risk and allow utilities to add services without additional visits to the home or business", said Bill Vogel. "These solutions far exceed the standards set forth by regulators at a cost that favorably compares with traditional AMR". Our combined utility solutions include:

  • Plug n' Play smart networks devices with embedded energy intelligence features.
  • Integrated metering, demand response and grid monitoring.
  • Choice of meter, network and systems technology.
  • Advanced mobility and/or broadband network integration.
  • Advanced functionality including load management, reliability, and quality monitoring.
  • Open Enterprise Solutions
Trilliant offers the industry, integrated infrastructure and choice of strategy. Trilliant is focused on making standards-based components work together as an integrated solution that reduces cost and improves overall performance. We work with meter, communications, software, and demand response partners to ensure choice and performance. Interoperable infrastructure for smart metering, smart grid, and load-specific connectivity is based on technology without a "catch" - independent of service, protocol, or software. In some cases, customers have chosen third party software such as Itron's MV-90TM to read our metering devices for billing-quality interval data, selecting the meter and software that best achieves their objective. Customers have chosen private network investments or services from their preferred network carriers to connect assets to the enterprise. The question is: Why invest in proprietary networks when open standards have emerged as viable alternatives?
